LAHORE, Jun 13 (NNI): The Lahore High Court has suspended the decision to reinstate the Members of National Assembly of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

A two-member bench of the Lahore High Court heard the intra-court appeal filed by the National Assembly secretary on Tuesday.

The court, while suspending the decision on the restoration of National Assembly members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, ordered the parties to respond by June 21.

Fawad Chaudhry, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Hammad Azhar, 61 PTI members who resigned from the assembly, National Assembly speaker, Election Commission of Pakistan and the federal government have also been made parties in the petition.

In the petition, it has been stated that 123 Members of the National Assembly of PTI resigned after the no-confidence motion against then prime minter Imran Khan was successful. The speaker of the National Assembly accepted the resignations of 11 members on May 28, 2022, while the resignations of the remaining members were accepted on January 17, 2023 as per the law.

According to the petition, the single bench of the Lahore High Court gave a decision to reinstate the PTI members on May 19, 2023, contrary to the law. The petition urged the court to accept the intra-court appeal and declare the LHC single bench decision null and void.

On May 19, 2023, the Lahore High Court suspended the de-notification of 72 PTI MNAs by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and told them to appear before the National Assembly speaker in person to have their resignations withdrawn.

The court also directed the NA speaker to reach a decision on the matter after listening to the stance of the PTI MNAs again.

Justice Shahid Karim heard the petitions filed by 72 PTI MNAs, including PTI’s Riaz Fatyana, requesting the court to set aside the notifications issued by the NA speaker through which their resignations were accepted as well as the one by the ECP in accordance with which they were de-notified and their seats declared vacant.
