ISLAMABAD, Feb 24 (NNI): The holy month of Ramazan is expected to begin in Pakistan on March 2, 2025, as the crescent moon is likely to be sighted on the evening of March 1, according to a forecast by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

A SUPARCO spokesperson stated that the new moon will be born on February 28, 2025, at 5:45 PM Pakistan Standard Time.

However, at sunset on February 28, the moon will be only 12 hours old, with a height of just 5 degrees. Due to its low altitude and an angular distance of 7 degrees from the sun, the crescent will not be visible to the naked eye.

The spokesperson added that Saudi Arabia may witness the crescent on February 28, leading to the likely start of Ramazan on March 1. In Pakistan, however, the first fast is expected on March 2.

Furthermore, SUPARCO forecasts that the Shawwal moon will be sighted on March 30, making Eid-ul-Fitr likely to fall on March 31.

The final decision on moon sighting, as per tradition, will rest with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, SUPARCO clarified. NNI
