ISLAMABAD, Nov 29 (NNI): Senior lawyers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have confirmed that the party chief Imran Khan will not contest intra-party polls in view of legal complications.
A team of the lawyer met Imran Khan in jail who said he will nominate a chairman from the party leaders, who will contest elections.
Senior Vice-President Sher Afzal Marwat confirmed that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan would be the candidate for the chairmanship of the party.
This announcement followed Imran Khan’s decision not to retain the top post due to legal obstacles, as the party heads towards internal polls.
Marwat conveyed this information during a conversation with a private news channel, while Imran Khan remained incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, entangled in legal battles.
Despite earlier statements from party leaders confirming Imran’s non-participation in the intra-party elections, the final candidate was expected to be revealed later.
Intra-party elections: PTI rubbishes rumours about Imran Khan not running for chairmanship slot
This development signals the end of Imran Khan’s tenure at the key position since the party’s formation over two decades ago.
The PTI’s Core Committee, on Monday, formally approved conducting intra-party polls within the 20-day timeframe mandated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Failure to comply with the orders would result in the loss of the party’s bat symbol.
Imran Khan’s decision not to participate stems from his disqualification as a parliamentarian for five years in the Toshakhana case.
He was found to be involved in “corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer wilfully and intentionally.”
Contrary to Marwat and other leaders’ announcements, the PTI issued a statement on X strongly refuting “speculations” about the election of a new party chairman. NNI
