LAHORE (NNI): The Punjab government directed on Sunday major electricity distribution companies to implement a Rs14 per unit reduction in electricity bills.
This relief, applicable to consumers using between 201 and 500 units, will cover bills for August and September.
A spokesperson for the Chief Minister of Punjab announced that on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, official letters have been dispatched to five key electricity distribution companies: Islamabad Electric Supply Company (ISECO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO). These companies are required to apply the reduction and adjust the bills accordingly.
The spokesperson explained that the Punjab government will absorb the financial difference between the actual cost of electricity and the relief amount, allocating Rs 45 billion from provincial resources to cover this expenditure. This decision comes in response to rising inflation and the increasing burden of utility costs on households.
This announcement follows former premier Nawaz Sharif’s recent pledge to provide substantial relief to consumers.
During a press conference, Sharif highlighted the contrast between the current economic conditions and the stability experienced during his tenure, including low inflation and affordable energy costs.
Sharif emphasised the need for this relief amid ongoing economic challenges and reiterated his commitment to supporting the public during difficult times. NNI
